All that is gold

I don’t even remember where I was when I took these, but I liked this place. I was outside of Jaisalmer in the Thar desert and other than that, I cannot tell you were these monuments were. . .

Today is filled with not so great news, but I feel that things are looking up. There is always something else, something more. . .and a good deal more to look forward to.

A shore of washed stones
A sky the color of stone
A stone cliff

Stony face, stony heart

There is nothing here,
Twisted roots, sea taking the land
Back. Sea wrack
And rain.
There is nothing
Here between us but stone.

One must learn to live with stone,
Make it a bed to lie on
A step to climb.

Carve.

Desert victory

The desert can be such a wild, unforgiving place. Amirah lent me her copy of Tracks to read and I’m loving it.
It all reminds me of my short stint in the desert [*with camels] back in June, 2011. It seems like ages ago now, but it was a truly lovely and rewarding experience.

On another note,

Fall break has officially started and I am beyond excited to relax and unwind and BE!

“You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
for a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
call to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting –
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.” – Mary Oliver

a new chapter

ke$ha the camel *note: real name = dream, but elsie and i thought that didn't suit her well. to us, she was ke$ha and only ke$ha

a new chapter of my life begins tomorrow.

{the photo unfortunately has nothing to do with what tomorrow holds. goodbye riding camels in the desert on the boarder of india and pakistan, hello textbooks!}

excited isn’t the right word, but i feel ready.  i bet that the whole back to school thing is going to be a rough transition, but to be honest, it isn’t nearly as overwhelming as moving across the world. i know there will be internet, phones, and anything i need at a target nearby. packing has certainly been challenging this time around – i know i’ve over packed but i have no motivation to go back and unpack a few shoes, jumpers, or necklaces.

unc life starts tomorrow. . .

unrelated thoughts:

+ a great song and an even greater feather headdress
